We're Hiring a Youth Librarian

Ruby Sisson Memorial Library serves 12,700 residents in Pagosa Springs and Archuleta County, Colorado, surrounded by the breathtaking San Juan Mountains and warmed by the deepest hot springs in the world. Our facility is currently under expansion and we are looking forward to bright new spaces for learning and doing as our new building opens this summer. As the Youth Librarian, you will plan a robust program of exciting activities in a maker lab, new children’s room, and outdoor garden spaces. You will take our programs into our gorgeous parks and into our partner schools, lead the Summer Learning Program, and develop an exceptional youth collection.  

 M.L.S. degree from an ALA accredited school or advanced degree in education or children’s literature plus two years experience in public or school libraries is required.

Starting salary $56,000 plus benefits.

 

Youth Services Librarian Job Description

The Youth Services Librarian position reports to the Director/Assistant Director and includes, but is not limited to, the following responsibilities.

Programming

·       Plan and present regular programs for children including multiple weekly story times.

·       Plan and present events developmentally appropriate to improve literacy skills.

·       Present a monthly LEGO Club or similar organized program.

·       Plan summer reading programs for children of various age groups.

·       Develop community partnerships with schools, and homeschool organizations.

·       Develop additional programs for children as grant opportunities arise.

·       Maintain youth programming budget.

 

Customer Service

·       Provide Reader’s Advisory services to both adults and children.

·       Staff circulation desk two hours per day and provide backup assistance when needed.

·       Answer phone and respond to patron inquiries.

·       Pull books for library displays.

·       Shelve books.

·       Provide technology assistance to patrons.

 

Collection Development

·       Maintain youth collection development budget.

·       Manage collection development and acquisitions for children from birth through teen ages.

 

Personal Development

·       Take continuing education classes as allowed by time and budget.

·       Keep current with children and young adult literature by reading professional journals.

·       Attend workshops offered by library organizations.

 

Education and Experience:

A Master’s degree in Library or Information Science from an ALA accredited college or university, or advanced degree in related field. Two years experience in a public library setting working with children.  Bilingual English/Spanish is a plus.

 

Schedule: Full-time (40hours/week) including one evening a week, and some weekends.
